Well we all know about this game by now, the once anticipated game of the year, now not so much. So the story of this game is pretty simple. You're Lincoln Clay, a badass Vietnam vet going home to his black mob family. After a couple of missions at the start of the game, he got betrayed, left for dead, his families are killed, and he recovered months later. Now he's pissed and wants to kill the sumbitch that did it to him................ Yeah this is totally the Punisher. Only African American. So basically Mafia 3 is a Godfather game clone. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is entirely dependent on whether you like the Godfather game in the past. This one in case you don't know. I just realized that Vito looks a lot like the default character model in this game. That can't be a coincidence. Luckily I love that game, and because of that, I like Mafia 3. Similar to Godfather, most of the things you do is you go to different mini missions of either killing important people, destroying enemy properties and just shooting shit up until you get enough damage to unlock the next story missions. Unlike Godfather though, you don't get to pressure shopkeepers to work with you by smashing their heads in. Instead you threaten them with your knife and you decide whether to kill them or let them work with you. The one thing that doesn't make me bored of these missions is the solid game mechanic. Shooting people and melee takedowns actually feel great, because they are pretty freaking brutal. Strangely you can pick between having non lethal or lethal takedowns, by switching them in the options menu..... like wtf is this?? Why not just have it be a button prompt instead? There's a pretty neat game mechanic in this game of dividing territories. During the start of the game, you make friends with 3 crime bosses: Vito from Mafia 3, Thomas Burke the Irishman, and Cassandra the complete bitch. Each have their own benefits to give to you. Vito specializes in giving you health items, Burke is all about sending you cars, and Cassandra is all about weapons. You can gain new perks from them by giving them control over the districts in the game that will increase their income. Now there's 6 districts in total, and each districts has 2 rackets, or "places that you can give to your crime bosses for them to manage". You take over rackets by doing missions like destroying properties or killing someone, or tailing someone with your car to a spot and then killing him. Taking over the rackets will unlock a main story mission, and after that, you have to give that district to 1 of the crime bosses, and that means the 2 rackets will belong to only 1 of the crime bosses you have picked to own that district. My advice is do not have 1 district with 2 rackets that has 2 different bosses in them. Split it evenly. Like say take over 1 district, give the rackets to 1 crime boss, and later on have the owner of those rackets be the boss for that district. If you have 1 district with 2 different bosses in it, one of them will have to be kicked out because only 1 crime boss can own that place. The owner of the racket that's not the district leader will lose his/ her racket, and that can piss them off which will lead them to betray you. You can experiment with this yourself because it's all up to you. I managed to split it evenly until the end with all 3 bosses equally happy, and not one of them betrayed me. Sweet! There's also character specific side missions for each of the crime bosses and their right hand man/ woman. Vito involves killing people, Cassandra is about stealing trucks filled with weapons, and Burke is about stealing specific cars. Completing them gives you even more perks and you learn more about these characters which is pretty neat. Too bad these missions are actually pretty freaking boring. The story missions are the highlight of this game as it's the ones with the most variety compared to the monotonous missions of taking over rackets in the game. One of them involves disguising as a waiter, entering a building filled with racist assholes, and then spiking the entire wine supply with LSD to get every guest high off their asses. It's funny as hell. There's also others like where you have to disguise yourself as a pit fighter and the one where you destroy a boat, which is covered in Joe's review. Those are great as well, though not so much the pit fight section because of how clunky the fighting mechanic is, but the section after that is pretty sweet. There are three major things I don't like about this game. The fact that the taking over district missions in this game is mandatory for story progress, and the side missions are pretty damn boring is one. Now the thing that makes the previous Mafia games work even though they're not that much of an open world game is those games follows the lives of the main characters from the beginning to years later, so every missions are different and exciting. Why can't the missions involving taking over the rackets be side missions or have more story missions so it doesn't get repetitive? The second thing: no. Fast. Travel. An open world game, WITHOUT FAST TRAVEL? WHY??? And because of that, traveling from point a to point b is a freaking pain in the ass. It's faster if you use super fast cars, but 100 times of driving to a place that takes 5 minutes each time you travel really gets on my nerve. The last one though, you can't change clothes and there's no such thing as a notoriety meter. WHY NOT?? It boggles my mind! I mean you're basically known by everyone in the game as a wanted criminal, especially after doing the story missions, and there's no repercussion like "your face is now known to the public" so you're more likely to be called by the police because everyone knows you and to avoid that you have to change appearance? BULLSHIT! Beatdown Fist of Vengeance from 2005 has it and it's awesome! This one's just a nitpick, but I don't like the soundtrack. Now overall it's a great soundtrack. But where's the orchestral scores? Like Mafia 1 and 2? Especially the main menu music? Compare the previous ones To this Yeah, doesn't sound as epic does it? It's too mellow for what the game is about. Especially the final mission. The song in that mission is..... not epic at all. It's so mellow that I put this song during the final mission, which is PERFECT. Thankfully the ending, or endings are perfect, with no stupid cliffhangers. Just a complete and satisfying ending that concludes nicely. Unlike that other game. Ahem, Shadow Warrior 2, you broke my fucking heart. So overall, this game is pretty good, if you like this style of game. If you play Godfather and hated that game, well this game will bore the crap out of you. For those that like Godfather and that similar kinds of games, I give this game the rating of "so good that you can't wait for the sequel, if there is any." For those that doesn't like Godfather, I give this game the rating of "it's okay, but you'll have to take a break every now and then before you continue after getting bored".
