The latest in the MVC series, and while it is severely hindered by a lot of things, it's really damn fun. Unfortunately for singleplayer content wise, while there is an arcade mode, there's no arcade mode character specific endings, so story mode is the only one with plot in it, which is a shame because that severely chops the singleplayer content, but at least there's a character specific challenge mode where you complete a lot of increasingly complex challenges, and the story mode. There's a trend in fighting games these days where they just have to follow Netherealm's "film experience". This is no exception. Initially it's not explained why all of a sudden Capcom and Marvel suddenly merges worlds and are fighting Ultron Sigma, but the game does explain things in a neat little plot twist later into the game. The game's main plot is that Ultron Sigma has 2 infinity stones which he uses to control people to become his personal army of world ending destruction, and it's up to the heroes to find the other 4 before it's too late. Thanos was reluctantly released from his prison, and it's a game of "who reaches the finish line first". I got to give it props for doing a couple of things right. The villains are great at their roles, especially Jedah, Thanos is awesome, some of the characters like Dante, Frank West, Spiderman and Tony are actually funny with good lines, and when the actions happens, it's pretty sweet. Buuuuuuuut, aside from the fact that a lot of the moments in the story are awkward fanservice that doesn't mix well, and a lot of the character's faces looks fucking wroooooooooongggggg, why in the holy mother of hell does this game have to have a lot of pointless characters that are just there for decorations with no contribution to the plot? Like Chun Li, Nova, Spencer, Dr Light, Captain bland as hell America that has 0% of the awesome characterization in the MCU movie version, Arthur, Hawkeye and Ghost Rider? Just let the ones who actually have impact in the story do their things and be side characters for pete's sakes! Not only are they severely underused, a lot of the dialogues between the characters are like they're from the middle ages, as in completely deadly serious while having no light heartedness or awareness that the situation that they're in are fucking ridiculous. They just talk like business people doing meetings and act like it's normal to have Ghost Rider, Strider Hiryu, a small sized knight straight from the middle ages, Rocket Raccoon, Dante and Megaman in the same place. Like.... if I was one of them, I would go "wait, does any of us realize, that this team up is really2 random and makes no Goddamn sense?" There's also the unfortunate fact that there's a lot of cool enemies in the story that could make for awesome boss battles, but you don't fight them at all. You got one of the big monster from Monster Hunter, MODOK, a gigantic sized Venom Symbiote, and even Grandmaster Meio, aka Strider Hiryu's greatest foe in the game. Instead they're all defeated in cutscenes.................. AAAARRRGHHHH!!! If this is an Asura's Wrath game, things will get epic as hell! Speaking of Asura's Wrath and Asura which TOTALLY should have been in this game, here's another thing that I found as such a complete missed opportunity: So this game's plot pretty much have a couple of both the Marvel and Capcom side as the definite heroes of the story. Capcom with both Megaman and Dante, Marvel with Tony and Spiderman. Why can't the story mode be a really cool mixture of these different game types that's associated with these characters? So have a DMC style hack and slash combo heavy sections, a Spiderman style traversal level, an Iron Man flying level which hopefully is good unlike those tie in games, and a side scroller Megaman game in disguise just like Megaman X? Or just make the story mode a Megaman X game in disguise, with him being customizable and have a side-quest fights against his allies so he can gain their abilities? Like after fighting Captain America, he gets his shield. After fighting Dormmamu, he gets a black hole attack. After fighting Ghost Rider, he gets his chain whip. And of course these abilities can be used in the side scroller stages to beat the crap out of enemies and reach places that can't be reached before which contains the Ultimate Armor. It can be done. Hell, last time Capcom made a Street Fighter Megaman game, and also the Phoenix Wright + Professor Layton game with both games' gameplay mixed together, AND IT IS GLORIOUS! It should have been Capcom's giant "fuck you" to Keiji Inafune after that piece of shit Mighty Number 9 game! Or you know, have CyberConnect2 be the guest dev for the story mode and make an epic as hell Asura's Wrath esque story mode. Sure it'll have a lot of QTEs, but those QTEs are fucking amazing. But alas, they instead decided to follow Netherealm's movie story mode approach. Such a waste! Alright. Got that out of the way. How about the gameplay for the fighting itself? Well, although the system was changed from the 3 VS 3 to now 2 VS 2 with the Infinity Stone mechanic from the Marvel Super Heroes game in 1995 but completely reworked upon, it's a freaking blast to play. The game's control scheme is more like MVC2 than 3 in that it uses the light heavy punch kick button layout and not the weak medium strong 3 button layout, or the dreaded "simple" control layout. It also removes the character assists, but instead it uses a tag system similar to Tekken Tag Tournament. You can't tag when you are under attacked by your foes beating the crap out of you unless you have 2 super meters and hold down the tag button, in which case the screen will turn ZA WARUDO only unfortunately without the benefit of stopping time and a ROAD ROLLER DA and you can control your tagged character to hopefully stop your foe from beating your character even further. Don't be like me and found how to do this after playing 100+ matches. The 6 infinity stones mechanic are also in the game, each with a usage and an Infinity Surge, aka super mode which activates certain benefits, and each stones vary in their use: Power makes a close range projectile that knocks enemies backward, and the surge makes your attacks far stronger Mind creates a trap for your opponent, and the surge gives you a rise in your super meter Soul heals you, and the surge makes both you and your partner able to attack at the same time with the benefit of healing, or revive a knocked out partner and make you both able to attack at the same time Time makes you teleport,and the surge makes your attacks super fast Reality creates a homing projectile, and the surge gives you 4 elemental attacks that can be unleashed using different buttons Space sucks your opponents towards you which is great for characters that has special throw moves, and the surge traps your opponent, making them unable to move a lot or tag and are confined in a box. I personally use the Reality stones a whole lot since it helps me a ton when my multiplayer foes just use characters that fly and spam projectile attacks all the time. Speaking of multiplayer, it's the same as when I played Tekken 7. It's really damn good! You will lose a lot and you will win a lot, and the connection quality is pretty damn good. As in, there's no lag or sudden frame drops. Most of the time. The only downside to this whole thing is that unfortunately unlike Tekken 7, you can't customize your characters with different outfits or accessories. But at the very least you are able to customize your title and profile pic when fighting other players...... which is pretty much what Street Fighter did already. Looks like a fully customizable character cosmetic feature in a Capcom fighting game isn't to be for now, but I can still wait! As for the lack of Xmen characters in the game, if the reasoning is indeed because of the current licensing dispute between Fox and MCU, then all I can say is go fuck yourself you copyright piece of shit. We'll have to wait until the future games where the Xmen will become one with Disney, and the circle will be complete. So in the end, although it's such a shame that the singleplayer is lacking, a couple of the character's faces looks horrifying, the story mode is the way it is now and the unfortunate lack of Xmen characters, I have a blast with the multiplayer of the game and am still playing it right now. Though I will not recommend buying this game at full price. I can only recommend this game if, like me, you buy it at a discounted price of bellow $40 and not the overpriced $60. I give this game my rating of "be disappointed with the singleplayer, but play the awesome online multiplayer again and again and again. For bellow $40". Or you know, just wait for Dragon Ball Fighter Z which will definitely offer the MVC 3 vs 3 combat that you expect, and have a cool story mode to play. Arc System Works, make us proud.
