  11. A Price Of Games Journalism It is interesting how often this tends to happen, and can make you wonder what other websites or magazines are blacklisted and by what companies for what reasons, though Kotaku's blacklists at least aren't related to negative reviews or coverage. Jim Sterling has mentioned Konami doing the same when he was at Destructoid over review scores. I saw someone mention that he was blacklisted by Sega while editing a magazine about Sega.

  13. Hello everybody who are spending great adventures on the lands of Kyrat. If anyone wants to co-op sometime, send me a request. My PSN is MoonlightDevil24. See you guys in game.
  14. Okay so a few weeks ago I finally got a PS4 and EB Games (Which is GameSpot in Australia, just a different name, same deal with Burger King) Was doing a bundle deal where for an extra $50 you got the PS4 Assassin's Creed Black Flag, NBA 14, Watch Dogs and 1 free month subscription to Foxtel (an Australian cable TV service). Since that's easily $300 worth of value and I really wanted to play Black Flag I went for it, I was even able to sell NBA and the Foxtel subscription. But I'm here to talk about Watch Dogs. I never had any interest in Watch Dogs. At all. I saw nothing interesting or very original at all about this game, and while 90% of the gaming world were rubbing their nipples in anticipation I was just sitting back and wondering how ridiculous AAA gaming hype has gotten. Okay so we all know about how Watch Dogs got a massive visual downgrade, yet despite all of this many people continue to claim that the game is still great. I hate to be the bad guy, but no. No it's not. I'm sorry, I just didn't see anything in this game that was better than average. I could spend all day bitching about everything I didn't like but I've got bigger fish to fry in this thread, so here's the biggest, main reason I didn't like Watch Dogs; It's too easy. And I don't mean that the combat is easy or what not, because this is one of THOSE games where they expect you to use stealth for everything and have made combat as hard as possible to stop you from charging in and killing everything (just like Deus Ex HR). But everything, EVERYTHING, is handed to you on a silver platter. Money is easily hacked from people walking on the streets, and there's no penalty for stealing thousands of dollars from innocent people, and a few upgrades later you'll automatically be notified when you're within range of someone who's got tons of money that's ripe for the taking. But the second mission, THE SECOND MISSION, I had bought every gun in the game, and nothing was a challenge because I was running around with two kinds of grenade launcher and machine guns up the wazoo. Not that I needed to because the only things of use that money buys are guns and cars, and the enemies drop all the guns you'll ever need. But it doesn't matter, because there's no clear difference between the guns, there's a star based ranking bar for the weapons, but a one star assault rifle does around the same damage that a 5 star rifle does, so all the guns feel exactly the same. And you don't even need to buy cars unless you REALLY want to drive a certain car. Chicago is apparently a booming super economy because ever 1 out of 6 cars is a high performance sports car, and they're just sitting on the street, so the cars on demand feature is useless because you can just steal any car you need. There's also no penalty for stealing cars, by the way. I'm sorry, but there's nothing interesting in this game. At all. I can appreciate that this is probably just me, and a lot of people are able to just over look some design flaws and enjoy the game, but there's nothing in this game that's overly great to me. It's been a couple weeks since I beat it and I can't remember a single mission that stood out to me, except maybe when you're fighting in T-Bone's scrap yard, but everything else is so by the numbers and generic there was nothing memorable in this game. None of the characters, none of the story, and nothing really in the gameplay. There's also a LOT of ludonarrative dissonance, yes, that dreaded phrase that people hate. But you see, unlike most smart asses who try to use it as a cheap excuse to hate on games like Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us, I actually know what ludonarrative dissonance means There's a bunch of scenes later in the game where Aiden thinks to himself that he's turning into a killer, and that he "not that kind of man", mean while I'm plowing over civilians, murdering hundreds of mobsters and stealing money from any person that walks close enough to me. There's also the fact that Aiden's character is so poorly written he doesn't realise that everything bad that happened to him and his family throughout the game is entirely his own fault. But hey, why should he regret being such a horrible person when he can be Batman? My final verdict? It was meh, not really worth the praise that people are giving it, and very deserving of any hate it gets. If you liked it, that's fine. But when a game is advertised as THE next gen game that will usher gaming into a new golden era, I expect there to be something next gen about it, not a game that's supremely average in every way. Also, I think I'm just done Ubisoft. Am I the only one feeling this way? Seriously, I'm just done. Let's ignore the fact that they lied through their teeth about Watch Dogs' graphics but Ubisoft have been doing NOTHING but coming up with new ways to piss people off. And it's not like this is anything new, they've been at it for years! First we had Assassin's Creed 2's DRM back in 2012 for PC, that Ubisoft defended by saying it works, even when their servers went down and rendered a bunch of their games unplayable. Ubisoft spun this in their favour of course, saying that it was just exceptionally high demand. And when they refused, underline, REFUSED to release a PC version of I Am Alive Stanislas Mettra seemed to openly mock PC users by saying "There's so much piracy and so few people paying for PC games we have to precisely weight up against the cost of making it. If only 50, 000 people buy the game it's just not worth it". This statement seems to imply that a Ubisoft game that hundreds of thousands of people to millions of people are playing, out of all those people only about 50, 000 of those gamers will have legitimately purchased the game. And in the same month they said that Ghost Recon Future Soldier wouldn't be coming to PC because, and I'm quoting Sebastien Arnoult here, "We know that 95% of our consumers will pirate the game". 95%. Ninety five percent. They KNOW that would happen. Doesn't everything about this just scream "Fuck you PC gamers"? I'm not even a PC gamer and even -I'M- pissed off about this shit. And I don't think I even need to talk about Ubisoft's list of shitty PC ports, weather it's Assassin's Creed 4 not being optimised because it's not important apparently, or From Dust not even fucking working properly, Ubisoft has made it very clear by now that it doesn't care about PC gamers, or the PC gaming audience, and would rather mock PC gamers behind their back's while lying about how they want to focus primarily on PC as a platform, which is bullshit because I'm yet to see a current Ubisoft game on the PC that doesn't require a gamepad to be playable. And then, of course, there's Uplay. Yes, let's talk about Uplay, a 'service' that doesn't do anything, gates content from Ubi's games, hassles gamers with separate log ins. AND, as it was discovered a couple years ago, is a security risk, leave a back door open on PC user's computers for malicious software via at least 21 games. It's a shitty thing that very few people like, and Ubisoft forces it into everything. There's not a single Ubisoft game, other that ZombiU and maybe Far Cry 3, that doesn't hassle you to log onto an online service that doesn't do anything. And I don't think I even need to talk about the Watch Dogs launch (yes, we're back on that game again) Where the game was unplayable to many people because Uplay shat itself and broke the game. And in more recent news regarding Assassin's Creed Unity (which I think will be completely fucking crap because Ubisoft is too chicken shit to do anything new or interesting with the AC franchise like it did in Black Flag) where Ubisoft seemed to shrug off the fact that history's most famous and deadly assassin was not only most active during the French revolution but was also female, making claims that it was just too expensive to use character models and voice actors for a female character. Because hey, why actually appeal to a wider audience when you can just say you are while going after the same teenage boys and young men. Not only does Ubisoft seem to think it's too expensive to have playable female characters, they thought it was a good idea to make up bullshit claims about how one of the biggest names in the AAA gaming industry could afford it, while games like Mass Effect, Skyrim, Saints Row, even fucking Super Mario has playable female characters and none of them are crying about how it's too expensive. But can you honestly believe ANYTHING from the company that admitted that they literally can't afford to make new IP's without turning it into a massive franchise? Let me repeat that last part. Ubisoft can't afford to make a single game any more. They HAVE to make a huge franchise. Ubisoft's accountants must hang themselves on a daily basis. I can't be the only person who's done with this crap. It can't be physically possible that no one else is just fucking sick of the lying, the shitting excuses, and the constant fucking requests to log into Uplay. I'm done with this crap. I honestly can not think of another major game company that is more deserving of the title of "The New EA". And yes, because all the sheep start bleating about how Ubisoft isn't the only company that pulls off constant bullshit, because EA does it too, man. That's just the point. EA does it too. As in EA isn't the only company constantly pissing people off. But Ubisoft seems to be the only company getting away with it. Well not any more. I'm for one am not just going to sit here and think "Oh well they made Assassin's Creed Black Flag and that was pretty awesome, so everything's okay" No. And I'll invite you guys to all do the same. I'm out. *drops mic*

Have any of you found such problems with dealing with preorders? What would you do if such a situation arose?
  16. http://staggerd.com/14261/ex-ubisoft-employee-reveals-his-horrible-experince-with-ubisoft There are no words to describe it. Just none and yes, it relates not only to Assassin's Creed but PC games as well with the CEO saying that 90% of PC Gamers are pirates. Just heartbreaking.
  17. Article and thread Starting to see people I follow on twitter linking to reports of bad framerates and a lot of technical problems in Unity for the PC, PS4, and One. Looks like some of the usual stupid decisions for the PC as well. Uplay is working just fine. After some of the people reporting this started getting replies and sharing some of those it looks like some people are experiencing a lot of problems like the above article says, some are having those problems often but not as much, and some people have only had issues a few times (if those people are all playing it on the PC, and that was your version of choice, good luck being someone with a setup that runs it well). Hopefully they fix some issues with a patch soon. Maybe look at buying Valkyria Chronicles instead, much better performance reports on it.
  18. Game: Watch_Dogs Age Rating: 18+ Genre: Open World Action-Adventure, Third Person Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Publisher: Ubisoft Game Director: Jonathan Morin Lead story writer: Kevin Shortt Played on: Playstation 3 Overview Watch Dogs is another open world game developed by Ubisoft Montreal, set in the near future of Chicago. The player dons the role of Aiden Pearce, a very talented hacker, who lives dangerously in a city where everything technology related is controlled by a single AI system called the ctOS. A simple job goes wrong which leads to a series of events that ends in the death of his niece, Lena Pearce. Aiden sets out to find the man responsible and with the help from a few ‘friends’ Aiden gains access into the ctOS. With the whole of Chicago now under his control, how far will Aiden go in the name of revenge? How far will you go? STORYLINE AND CHARACTERIZATION The story follows Aiden’s path of revenge as he tries to track the man responsible for the death of his niece, Lena Pearce. It takes the player on a journey through the shady world of Chicago where no one is what they seem. With the city being filled with philanthropists involved in human trafficking, gangs controlling illegal trades, corrupt cops and fixers who are willing to trade their morals for mullah, there’s bound to be bullets flying and batons clashing. With Aiden having full control over the city, the story is fast paced but yet it somehow fails to keep the player engaged with the ever so distracting Chicago brimming with tons of interesting and surprisingly detailed side content. THE GOOD The idea of hacking in an open world game was an innovative one and Ubisoft did a wonderful job of implementing it in the game. Ubisoft took a whole new approach to the open world genre, by trying to make Chicago more lively and realistic than any other in-game city. With the unique NPC profiling system, where every NPC has a unique persona, the city feels very much alive and humane. Not only that, but Ubisoft were clever enough to use hacking not only as a game play element but also as a central background theme to the narrative. Its almost a requirement for video games nowadays to perfectly balance storytelling with game play and Ubisoft made sure they did just that; the concept of hacking is beautifully integrated into both the game play and the narrative. And hence the story feels a bit more interesting than your average revenge story. The characters in the game are carefully constructed with their very own detailed personalities and the voice acting is pretty good although it could have been a lot better. Aiden, who knows humans as well as he knows computers, is a man with many flaws which makes him seem more human and less clichéd. Its a relief that Ubisoft didnt stereotype the whole ‘hacker’ dimension and modelled characters in a unique way. To sum it up, the storyline is ambitious and the characterization is pretty solid with every side character being able to hold his/her own ground. THE BAD When there is a huge amount of side content in a game, there is a risk that it might over shadow the main story missions and that is exactly what has happened in Watch Dogs. The main story isn’t strong enough to compete with the interesting and defined side content that is in the game. It fails to hold the attention of the gamer for more than a mission or two. Also, the story is not enjoyable if it isn’t played on a continuous run; take too long a break from the main story missions and you’ll have no idea what is happening in the game. Although, Ubisoft did a good job of integrating hacking into the storyline, sometimes it feels rather forced and unnecessary. There are whole chunks of the story which the game could have done without. The storyline tends to stray away from the main purpose way too often; most of the time you forget that your niece has been killed and you are doing these missions to find the man responsible. In an attempt to cover a wide ground Ubisoft ended up stretching the story to such a point where the story feels ‘too much work’ for the gamer. GAMEPLAY An open world game, by definition, has a lot of game play aspects and endless possibilities. Add to that the ability to hack any electronic device in the game; the thought itself is orgasmic. But does it live up to the expectations? THE GOOD The first thing you will notice when you start playing this game is the high number of points of interest that are on the map of Chicago. The amount of content in this game is mind boggling. The side missions are very detailed and unique. With digital trips that cause weird yet graphically amazing hallucinations to AR games to fixer contracts, the world of Watch Dogs is filled with a variety of game play content. Add to these mini games like chess and drinking; side content in a game has never felt better. Also the ctOS’s crime detection system, which systemically predicts crimes that are going to happen, gives the gamers a chance to be the vigilante they have always wanted to be. The gamer gets a chance to stop a crime before its even happened ( yea, you finally get to live your dream of being Tom Cruise ) and the fact that its systemic ( completely random ) makes it even more fun. And it never gets too repetitive as the victim and the perpetrator are always different people with different personas and the chase with the perp always adapts itself to its surroundings. Also, the shady world of Chicago is filled with criminal gangs that need a lesson to be taught and criminal convoys that need to be stopped and although these might sound repetitive, they are fun as there is a lot of game play freedom and each situation can be handled differently; you can go in by hacking the cameras, jumping off one camera to another, locating the target and taking him out by overloading a fuse box, or you could go in stealthily taking out each and everyone out till the target is the only one left with no idea that his whole gang is down. And if everything else fails, there is the always the option to go in guns blazing. Chicago is filled with gun shops and pawn brokers and there is no shortage of money as you can always hack into the bank accounts of the unsuspecting citizens of Chicago who always seem like they have something to hide. The profiler app in your in-game mobile helps the gamer get info on any citizen which makes the game feel more realistic and human. But to gain access to this info, the gamer first needs to unlock the ctOS towers which are similar to the outposts in Far Cry 3. Taking over these towers are fun as they can be approached in multiple ways but it’s a pity that there are only 6 towers and the fun ends before it even begins. No review of Watch Dogs is ever going to be complete without the mention of its awesome hacking mechanism. Hacking is the most important game play element in this game and Ubisoft have nailed that part. With the ability to hack any kind of electronic device from things like a pace maker of a heart patient to traffic lights, draw bridges and the ever famous L train, at any moment in the game, a whole new dimension is added to the game play freedom. There are missions which can be completed by standing in a single place by hacking and jumping off from one camera to another; the number of possibilities is amazing and the credit goes to the meticulous level designing. It was good thinking on Ubi’s side to not include the ability to shoot while driving as it would have made the point of hacking traffic lights and draw bridges or blockers etc while driving moot. The online one on one hacking is a whole new experience; its like nothing you have ever seen before. The aspect of someone seamlessly ( without any loading screen ) hacking into your game is a bit un settling and fun. Inspired from the multiplayer of the AC series, the online experience is a must for every gamer as it gives each and every gamer their own unique experience to share. THE BAD Although the side content is fun, the main story missions fall short on variety. Many of the missions feel repetitive. The driving mechanism is below par and is sometimes a bother given that a significant portion of the game play is based on bringing down target vehicles. Also the lack of realistic car damage spoils the pleasure of cinematically taking down a target vehicle. Its disappointing that weapon customization is totally absent from the game. Granted that the game depends on hacking and stealth but still, the lack of customization is a real let down for the trigger happy gamer. Its surprising that there is no option to replay the story missions. Ubisoft should have included it and the lack of this option further reduces the already minute replay value. Watch Dogs has a morale system that judges you based on your actions in free roam rather than the story based choices and hence it fails to make its presence known. Given that there are a lot of hacking options in the game, a bit more of variety in hacking was expected given the hype that the game was given and the reputation that the developer holds. To wrap it up, a bit more of variety in game play could have made this game a lot more fun. GRAPHICS AND ENVIRONMENT Almost every gamer who paid even the slightest attention to Watch Dogs pre release publicity must be familiar with the whole ‘graphics downgrade’ fiasco. But keeping all the false promises and misleads aside, the game looks decent; decent but not good. There are moments where it feels like the graphics could have been better. The interiors are better than the outdoors although there aren’t too many interiors and the textures vary from place to place. All in all, the graphics were good for what they were but could have been a whole lot better given all the time the devs took and all the promises they made. The environments are well detailed and the ever so humane NPC’s make Chicago even livelier. Gamers couldn’t have asked for a better Chicago and the absence of loading screens makes it even more enjoyable. MUSIC The music is different and matches the tone of the game. There is a touch of techno in the background scores which fits in perfectly with the theme of the game. Apart from the soundtrack, there are a wide range of songs available on your phone and in the in-game radio, which are easy on the ears but none of the songs seem to fit the game mood. The selection of songs is un-satisfactory to say the least and one would rather keep the radio permanently off in this game. FINAL VERDICT Watch Dogs is an ambitious game and almost manages to pull it off. Its got its flaws, but the game has to be appreciated for its ambition, its innovative idea and implementation. For a new IP, this game has done tremendously well and is recommended to all open world enthusiasts and hackers alike. At first notice Watch Dogs looks like an average 7, but with the amount of content thats in this game, it easily deserves a 8. People might argue that it has a low replay value but when the game boasts a game play length of about a 100 hrs ( including the side missions ) who needs a replay value? My Score: 8.4/10

  21. Info: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/15/far-cry-4-announced-for-2014 Yep. Ubisoft just announced it and it's coming this year. Thoughts? Personally, it should at least end with the third game. I could be wrong though.
