looking back.. Mad Max: Fury Road is the (blockbuster) movie of the year 2015.. (ahead of Star Wars 7, Bond and Age of Ultron…)
even if it does’t have much of a story (well most blockbusters don’t)… it’s still awesome, and the “freshest” blockbuster of the year with.. no real “down” moments
while Age of Ultron and Bond-Specter both disappointed somehow…imo Bond more
even SW7 disappointed a bit… , but as a SW fan, the hype was so big, it had such nostalgic moments, and has so much “fan service” to explore and gossip about,.. SW7 is imo the “biggest” movie of the year
It really wasn’t that good. You must pee your pants during the Fourth of July.
I was kind of surprised you rated the movie so high, I saw it and for the most part found it pretty meh! Granted the art direction, aesthetic design, character design, vehicles and choreographed action sequences were all fantastic! Full credit should go to the art department who worked on the movie. But I would still say all that stuff only makes half a movie at most, you still need strong characters, good plot, good writing etc.
I agree on the surface the lore was pretty cool, but the problem is the whole thing didn’t make a massive amount of sense to me. In the original Mad Max films I could imagine these small bands of desperate outlaws living a nomadic kind of life in the post-apoc Australian outback and surviving by scavenging the remains of a broken society. But what you have in Fury Road is these much larger settled groups living in what appears to be a vast and completely barren desert. As you say there was the bullet farm (or factory) and the refinery which one would assume are equally populated… where do they get all their resources to support all these people? What do they all eat? Where do they get the raw materials to make bullets and gunpowder? And given the rate at which young men die in this movie, how in hell to they sustain the population? Maybe these things seem pedantic, but imo for any lore to be strong it needs to be believable, you need to be able to imagine actually living in the world. And for me the world that they presented in the movie raised far too many wtfs? to sit well. Maybe the world could be explained in a way that makes sense if we are given more info, maybe in the game (?) but for at least the movie didn’t do this. Joe has control over all the scarce precious water, but the only method they have come up with to distribute it is by pumping out of massive pipes onto the valley floor where 89% is wasted. Okay, this was all about Joe power and the subservience of his people but it was still kinda dumb!
Max himself was about as two dimensional as you can get. Max originally had a lot of depth and back story… we saw his relationship with his co-workers, his family. The new max we know nothing about at all. I was reminded of Yahtzees review of the Thief game where he talked about the new Garret. He said they took a deep and complex character and turned him into Batman… this big, moody slab of nothing who communicates in grunts. Today’s generic, archetypal action hero. Furiosa was a little better but every time I saw her I just thought, “She’s no Ripley”. The only character who I really thought had any depth or was in any way relatable at all was Nux, he managed to be believable in that world, sadly it was too little to make the world itself believable. Joe’s character was well designed aesthetically but completely one dimensional, all we know about him by the end of the movie is he’s in charge, kinda mad and wants a pure baby.
One thing I don’t think you mentioned which I found really stupid was the when they go through the canyon. On the outward journey they blow up this natural arch of rock over the road to block the path of the pursuers… 24-48 hours later when they make their way back through the canyon there in another, remarkably similar looking rock arch over the road which they also try to blow up!! Whats going on? I’ve seen things respawn in games, never in a movie! Did they rebuild it?! Is the valley littered with convenient rock archways?
I am surprised you didn’t rage more about the Interceptor. Max movies were three things, Max, a dog and a car! That car is iconic! We see it right a the start of the movie and after about 5 mins Max loses it, and I was like wtf?! Then he get’s tied to the front of his own car and I was like, okay, he’ll get free and take it back, Well, he gets free, and the car gets totalled!! I was sooo disappointed! I wanted to see Max in his V8 Ford Interceptor driving along with the big rig, helping to protect it and take out Joes men. Massive disappointment, I feel betrayed!
In the end, action is great, I love action… but in the context of a movie it has to be contrasted and juxtaposed with non-action otherwise it loses all meaning. Action has far more impact if it serves as a periodic climax or culmination of events leading up to it.
Sadly it seems today cramming movies with action has become a way to make “easy” movies. If you have enough spectacular scenes with impressive effects you can forego the need to actually have much plot, or pacing or character development… which, lets face it, are actually far harder things to pull off well in a movie than explosions, and far riskier for the bottom line
15 comments so far. Three of them are mine.
I conclude that the Angry Army figures this movie to be not worth arguing with… at best.
Joe is wayyy to the left of the Angry Army.
At least we still got Reaxxion . . .
Careful, Joe. Don’t get your hopes up for the game being like the movie. It’s my understanding they are unrelated to each other and early reports are the movie set up a mountain the game is not prepared to climb.
I suspect the game will be alright, but not as good as it could be, but that’s just speculation right now. We’ll know a little more come E3.
Being a big fan of all 4 Mad Max movies now, I agree with you guys. This movie was awesome. I saw it in theaters twice, and I haven’t done that in like… 20 years.
The game is AMAZING and, FOR ME lived up to the hype. Only downfall is the lack of map, not in size but in things in general. But hey it is an wasteland so not much of a word there.
What characters? What plot? I mean sure, the action as awesome as hell and the effects were cool. But what story? Max had about 5 lines in the entire movie, furiosa was a one tone pony never changing from gruff determined tough girl like boring Jolie when she played Lara Croft, and the rest? The wives? Tell me one character trait of ANY of them! Oh right, there the pregnant one that dies, the token brown one, the red head and the blonde. Such awesome characters that add so much to the movie … the old ladies? You mean those guns attached to vaginas that die like redshirts and add nothing? The bad guys? Ok, fine, Joe is a character in as much as you can easily recognize him, but he’s just another crazy mad post-apoc warlord. And the story of this movie is the definition of spinning wheels. “let’s run to this place, ZOMG it’s dead, let’s run back to the old place and hope we kill the bad guy on the way”. Why the fuck does everyone praise this movie so? It’s the same empty idiotic pure action shit Transformers is without the blatant racism and mysoginism and shot somewhat competently.
For fucks sake enough with the stupid feminism bs, hiding the movie’s flaws. The people didn’t hate cause furiosa was as good as max, it was cause Mad Max isn’t in this fucking movie! He speaks 5 lines of note throughout the whole thing! That’s not a character, that’s an extra, that’s one of the nameless shirts on star trek that tell the captain what the scanners say! The story was non-existant, there’s nothong here, just one huge chase much like the retarded Run or Minority Report movies were. They had one, maybe 2 characters, actual fcking characters you can identify not by names or generic stereotypes, but actual unique things: Joe for his unique design if not so unique personality and Nux, the one geniune character, a brainwashed meatbag who discovers the lies he’s been told, is left empty and depresed and resolves to end his life his way for his ideals and choices. the one good thing in this movie: Nux. The rest is pure meaningless bullshit that looks cool (again, motherfucking Transformers!)
Hey joe ,please review the wolfenstien games viz the new order and the old blood , i know that you have other important games to review but please review it if you can. I assure you the game will be worth your time.
O-fucking-K, I’m starting to watch and it better be 10/10!
9/10?! This movie is 20 out of fucking 10! Booo. Shame on you, Joe. =)
I thought the story was boring and pointless…. The action was good but i never cared for any of the characters tbh a massive let down.
You obviously didn’t watch the original movies
This was NOT ‘Mad Max’. Maybe ‘Mad Maxine’, but not Max. This Max had no personality, no attitude! He was unnecessary and needless to the plot! His character could have been anyone! I was sooooooo disappointed in this movie! It was an ‘alternate universe’ as far as I was concerned. Nux made a more interesting character than Max. Don’t get me wrong – loved the action, nice explosions! Nice mayhem. But boring plot. And just not “Max”.
Yeah, some of us have been calling it “Beta Max”.
Probably because that wasn’t Mad Max at all, just some guy who took over after real Max, many years after Mad Max 3. Max and Furiosa were roughly same age in this movie, real Max had a wife and a child… but furiosa was born after apocalypse in green place. She left many mothers when she was a child, 7000+ days before movie and thats about 20 years. There was a green place before she was born, there was many mothers before she was born, there was a wasteland before she was born.
There is much more…
He become Max in this movie, he earned that name.
Sorry for my English.
I’ve heard that fan theory.
It doesn’t explain the leg-brace though. Or that the director has repeatedly insisted that this is Max and that this world is mythic, with no plot continuity except character continuity.
Did watch this movie with my wife last weekends. Didn’t expect too much but also we weren’t really impressed either. Yet another popcorn movie for teenagers. I didn’t pay attention to PG rating but obviously it’s 16+ while it should be 18+. And it is a main problem with this movie. There are a lot of explosions and car crashes but I saw almost zero blood violence and/or any sexual harassment you would expect from such violent apocalyptic universe. It’s more like a theatrical play and kinda selective on touchy subjects. Also I was disliked by script commonplace in general.
Visuals are great tho (especially dust storm).
The movie is rated R not PG.
Didn’t saw it but i had expected that, too. Not that I like that sort of stuff but in a babaric future it should be there in the movie. Probably they leaved that out to reach a “broader audience”->more money
