The opening to this game feels real. I just remember playing this for the first time at2am and it feels like a dream. it’s not just a game, it’s a legend with an amazing story and music.
How the fuck is Quiet’s outfit a negative to the game? Thats like saying, “Link’s new outfit is stupid, i don’t like it” and putting that as a Con on the new zelda.

Maybe the way the game ended was a “revengeance” from KOjima to Konami for bully him all the time. I dont know what gonna be MGS without his “father”, but Konami will still drain from that franchise. At least I can be “happy?” playing the 5 first titles (MSX, PSx and PS2).
P.S: I LOVE Quiet’s OUTFIT. The less she wear the better. hahahahahahaa!!!!!
This game can go both ways. WHile many things like its graphics and story are amazing, it is lacking some content that should have been included to improve the game. They should not have cut out the final ending which might not have been the best but it would have added the extra zing at the end. Also, some of the outfits for the characters have been changed to better go along with the lighting and atmosphere of the game. Ok game but could have been better.
I totally agree! It could have been a lot better, but it was good also. It was more a less a cash grab because it had the MGS in the title, but it was a good stand alone game.
I only got this game recently, and I LOVE it! True, I did wish there was a deeper story than the one it got, but I still don’t think its a bad story. I wish there were more varied environments, which I still acknowledge that to go into open world, mainly outside areas is already a variation on the usual Metal Gear environments, but I do miss those metallic and high-tech interior areas. My main complaint, though, is that Snake doesn’t talk enough. I know he wasn’t a chatterbox in the last games, but he contributed enough so that it became evident what his stance on a situation was, and we felt the pressure and anxiety like he did. Without it, I don’t feel any real big urgency for anything. It would be nice to see him interact with others, see his point of view on a situation, and it would be great if there were video phone calls again. That’s the main reason that I can’t give this game a 10. I can’t relate to the story and main protagonist. Other than that, the game is amazing! Haven’t had a chance to play MGO, but I honestly don’t care. 8.5/10 from me.
I feel like alot of the negativity towards this game is due to the new structure of the gameplay. For everyone that likes Mgs1 the best and that they feel that TPP is too repetitive is most likely because of game length. I dont know about you guys but I could beat Mgs1 in one sitting–thanks to the stealth camo, of course–while TTP is easily 30+ hours of content. The game starts to feel repetitive due to it being a sandbox game, think about Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed, Skyrim, and even Fallout, they all start to lose their steam towards that mid way point because the missions are just the different variation of the same thing. In TPP’s case the game is just too damn long gameplay wise, sort of the opposite of Mgs4 which is relatively average in game length without all the cut scenes. The change in the mgs formula is what rubbed so many mgs veterans the wrong way.
Great game, I love the MGS series to death. Anyone who wants this game should buy used so Konami doesn’t receive a dime.
I’m a huge fan of Angry Joe (other Joe you rock) but I think this game deserves an “aftermath” review. I LOVED the first chapter of this game but chapter 2 took this from a 9/10 to a 5/10 for me. It was absolute lazy nonsense. The immersion was lost. I am scratching my head over how games like Dying Light get such huge knocks on their score about the story yet a game with Kojima’s name gets a free pass and an automatic good score. MGSV TPP is a neutured 3rd person Far Cry 4. I wouldn’t complain if it were a neutered Far Cry 3 because at least we’d have a Vaas instead of someone as pathetic as skull face. If we go into the FOB system it just goes starts at mach speed downhill. Chapter 2 was more like a drag racer driving off a cliff. The FOB idea is like an SR71 Blackbird nosediving into the dirt. Encouraging people to be complete asses is absurd. Thank god that FOB invasions are being largely ignored by the majority of players, which is the most unexpected and pleasant thing I took away from this game. Most gamers don’t want to steal from other players for no good damn reason whatsoever and I applaud those who like I have no desire to invade and take what others have earned. This game is chapter 1 plus 2 missions and the rest is bloat. Did the reviewers actually play through the whole game? If they didn’t I understand, You have time constraints. In a game like this I think it deserves a “looking back” review.
Konami is now offering Insurance on your resources you collected in the game. If someone nicks it then you won’t have to worry about taking a loss, Just give Konami more of your money and everything will be fine a dandy. You know, its things like this that really makes me wonder if flushing my money down the toilet would have been a preferable then buying this game.
So quiet is sexualized. So what?? What is exactly wrong with that?
Quiet’s presentation is part of why I can’t really get back into the game. It’s disheartening having to distance myself from her overt sexualisation as a female gamer. As much as I don’t want it to, it bothers me. Hideo Kojima’s reasoning behind why she’s portrayed in that way is also quite a weak reason. As if there aren’t better ways of presenting your main female character with whatever problem she has in a meaningful manner?
She connects directly to sniper gandpa from Snake eater who did live from photosynthesis. Storywise it makes sense she exists. And for that she cannot survive with clothes. But I think you value the brilliant story Metal Gear has to offer not so much, right?
Your problem are good looking women. *cough* excuse me: I mean women portrayed as sex objects. Ok.
I highly recomment you watch or play Witcher 3 return to here and then tell me that this “man whore” is not a womans dream. Face, body and ASS. Why should only our site be portrayed as sexobjects and not the other half? I want to have my part of fun, too.
Watch movies and play games from the last 20 years. Grow up.
I think “reverting to a hormone-driven 13yr old” is not “growing up” per se.
because gender discrimination is a joke right? Did I miss the part where Arnold in Conan the barbar was wearing his burka or did we just watch different movies?
If that was “okay-ish”, Quite is perfectly fine. Ready to go to church on sunday in her outfit and nobody could argue against it. So stop the bigotry of yours.
Well I played ALL MGS games, and my favorite is still MGS1.
If this MGS V deserves a 9 or a 10 out of 10, then MGS1 and MGS4 deserves an impossible score of 20\10.
This game is repetitive and I got bored of destroying the same bases 10x each and doing the same stuff over and over grrrrr…
I agree but it could be a matter of taste. Most people say Silent Hill 2 was the best game of the series but for me it misses the cult, the hellish otherworld, bossfights, and close combat is a mess. First title is for me still the best Silent Hill game. I think it is just taste.
So, it’s Peacewalker 2.0?
Since most of the mechanics mentioned are taken from Peacewalker: building and expanding your mother base in the form of a sea platform, recruiting enemy soldiers by kidnapping them with the fulton system, the fulton system itself, the entire research and development process. Not that it’s a bad thing, Peacewalker was really fun.

Agreed with this review, its an ok game tbh but the fact Kojima is no longer a part of this will mean the rest of the titles will suffer, Konami say otherwise but they would, Kojima IS Mgs, listen to the fans for once Konami. Hopefully Kojima goes spaz and creates a new stealth genre to bury the new MGS titles.
As someone whos hispanic you are such a fucking tool. I would love to fight you. Let’s do this. Richmond Virginia. Ill beat your fucking ass
Internet Tough Guy, in 2015.
Amazing. I would expect a dinosaur before such a relic.
Great review joe yea I agree the way things were left out and cut up and kojima leaving this had something to do with konami pushing the game forward or them trying to muck with the way kojima wanted it to be
otherwise pretty great review but I have to go wash my eyes with acid now because of other joe in drag lol
Well i’ll be honest. This review really wants me to go out, get the Metal Gear Legacy collection and catch up. This definitely felt like a huge production for you and other joe.
My dad doesn’t play games but even he loves Phantom Pain 🙂
It is a great review as always.
But this time I disagree with the score completely. The game is a big letdown for old fan base.
Lazy story telling, mission based gameplay (in MGS!), tons of arguing moments (like the obvious sexism which could’ve been avoided easily) even the wrong voice acting.
“Kept you waiting huh?” – said by someone not being Hayter sounds like a cheap joke .
This game is so different – strip the “MGS” in the name and nothing would change. It’s clear the game was made for a new audience. What about the old one?
Kojima has lost the grip he had and sadly started to suffer from his own narcissism – the most sad situation that could happen with a genius.
The game does get a bit repetitive after a while. The thing that really amazes me however is they get Keifer Sutherland to do the voice of Big Boss and so far he seems completely wasted. Granted I only got to chapter 10 but so far Big Boss hasn’t had that much dialogue. I’m beginning to think they called the wrong person “Quiet.”
Either the video game industry is so up Hideo Kojima’s ass, that all this praise Phantom Pain is getting (with not one negative review) is their answer to The Human Centipede (FEED THEM KOJIMA! FEED THEM!). Or maybe today’s generation of gaming is so pathetic that gamers accept incomplete (mission 51 or chapter 3: Peace) games, sold broken (mission 29 and 42) that needs to be patched (that doesn’t fix all the games glitches) as normal? So with all the problems this game has, it cost it one point over all (a 9 out of 10)?! Awesome!
after 4 hours, i stoped to play this game, so repetitive, boring story
Yeah, just like me, but I played more than 20h doing the same crap over and over again. THINS AINT MGS.
MGS1 is my favorite game EVER and this game doesnt catch up with it’s standards.
MGS1 and MGS4 in my opinion are WAY ahead of this open world repetitive peacewalker mechanics MGS V,
Love the review Joe, you hit on all the topics of the game that were both the greatest parts and the less than desirable ones. I’m absolutely loving this game, at almost 30+hrs and only at 14% done.
Can’t wait to start seeing Delrith (Not Joe) get more action in your game reviews; any room for a “Middle Joe” on the team? LOL. Can’t wait to see if you do a Destiny Taken King review, wonder if that game has any way to washing away the bad taste of the initial launch.

How is Quiet’s outfits dumb?
There’s no ending? Where’d you get this 4th from? That’s the ending to chapter 2.
If they had just had that been her outfit to begin with, this game would have avoided so much flack.
For god’s sake stop forcing poor happy Joe to wear weird ass costumes you savage!!!
Also….awesome review as usual man…
This wasn’t a review I was looking forward to precisely because of the whole Quiet non-controversy.
Its not so much that I love Quiet; I kind of stopped playing MGS around the 4th one, just lost interest and the mooing war-mechs made me laugh too hard to play well. And I have porn so its not like I need this for wank material.
It’s just this awful, reflexive need to bash what the general majority of males (whether they admit it or not) find sexy in order to appease the Anita Sarkeesian-esque SJW politics that the in-crowd among online reviewers espouse.
This isn’t about realism—the series pretty much pulled a Clarence Boddicker on realism a long, LONG time ago.
This isn’t about objectification—this series has spent hours upon hours sexually objectifying its male characters to zero rancor.
This is about this 3rd wave feminism and its prudish bullying tactics against anyone they dislike (Which is everyone).
You know what? Most straight or bi men think girls in bikinis are hot. They like to look at them, they like to fantasize about them, and that’s perfectly fine. And if it upsets you in this particular video game, don’t play the fucking game. I missed the last constitutional convention that passed an amendment requiring prudish SJWs to play games with content they found objectionable.
Also, and this is kind of funny given the intent to “satirize” the game’s content, using OJ—the physically fittest member of your crew—kind of defeated the purpose. You or Delrith might have been better suited to the task. All you did was make me remember the infinite number of times we got a nice, detailed close-up of Snake’s ass in a skin-tight suit or other gear that left nothing to the imagination.
Joe,can you please stop excusing cd projekt red for their juvenile things?Yes its a great company, yes witcher 3 is an amazing game, but it still has a juvenile approach to female nudity. It practically starts with naked female butt for no reason. And while there are plenty of female tits and asses to be seen, you never see a single male ass.And witcher 3 is the best one when it comes to that, because 1 and 2 were far worse.
The first ass you see is Geralts. And you see it as often as females. Double standards much?
Have you watched the scene recently?Go ahead and check it out again. You dont see geralts ass,the camera cuts just above his ass.You see his feet, you see his chest, but never his ass.So unless you somehow extended the fov,you never ever see his bare ass.Not even during sex when you get to see both ass and tits of the female you are having sex with.So yes,its most definitely double standards.
Well, I wouldnt blame that on CDPR. I’d rather say that the witcher 3 is a quite authentic approach to this subject based on its lore. You probably have never read the books. I have, and believe me it is very similar in there
So what youre saying is that books are full of easy and pointless horse races, running around fields for days on end picking flowers and punching cows, chugging half a dozen potions mid sword swing, and eating huge chunks of raw meat in less than a second?Damn, now I have to read those, that sounds awesome!
No, I was referring to the way sexual content is in the game in reply to your comment
My point was that just because some aspect of the book was juvenile, its no excuse for the creators of the game to make that aspect juvenile as well. Its on their heads, not on the writer of the book. They picked and chose which aspects of the book to translate faithfully, and which ones to adapt,so the problems of the game are the problems of the game, not the book.
Also,Ill clarify once more:I dont mind the sex in the witcher series,I dont mind that geralt is a whore and that all sorceresses want to bang him.I mind how it was presented. The sex cards in 1,the full female frontals in 2 while geralt always has pants, and the nudity being exclusive to just females in 3.If the camera in 3 was showing geralts butt during sex,I would say the game was just fine with its approach to sex.Its this half censorship that I call bullshit on(censoring male nudity while allowing female nudity).
Ok, I get your point, in that respect you are probably right. However you are still missing a great deal of lore that would make you understand some things. Like, the other sorceresses (except for Triss) wanted to bang Geralt mostly because the society of sorcerers was like politics, on the surface everyone is friends with everyone, but in the background most of them just want to screw with the other one (not literally in this case 🙂 ). There are very few real friendships between them, that is why it was so painful for Yen what Triss did for example. In general sorcerers (and especially sorceresses) liked “playing” with simple human beings because they felt overly superior to them, and just enjoyed using them. In fact Yen was pretty much like this to Geralt the first time they met.
Thats pretty much what Ive gathered from the game itself. Its good at presenting characters and their motivations.
The source for conflicts could be the difference in countries when a game is free for a certain age. Witcher 3 is here in Germany legally available at 16. That’s an age where you can marry someone if your parents agree. Marry someone, live with that person, and have sex. Happens not that often here and all the people I know would raise 2 eyebrows instead of one but it is law and possible. In the USA Witcher 3 is supposly for kids at 13 available. That’s the problem with these scenes. Made for people 16 years old almost young adults but 13 year old kids can buy it in the USA. The same goes for Phantom Pain and the Quite discussion I guess.
Boy, AJ really doesn’t seem to like it when girls are super sexy in games. Seen him rant about it more than most women. When OJ dresses skimpy though…can’t believe it took me this long to realize. :p
Bigotry. And they don’t even realise it.
As if Arnold in Conan was in full body armor. Didn’t hear any complains about him beeing half naked all the movie long.
Quite is fine as she is. The rest is trashtalk and bigotry. The game has other issues much more worth to mention them.
mgs is awesome, other joe is awesome, angry joe is awesome. Glad you brought Oj on full time, however that dude Delrith creeps me right the hell out
AJ, and OJ be careful around that guy, not trying to be a dick or anything. He gives off some pretty strange vibes. But if you’ve known him for awhile, and you all cool, who am I to judge.
Anyway great review as usual, nice solid points (get it). Joe I didn’t hear you talk about how it adapts to your place style.
So far I’ve only heard Yongyea mention it. For example if you infiltrate mostly at night, the guards will start to wear NVG’s. If you’re constantly shooting dudes in the face, they will wear head gear, etc.
Fantastic game, and good job with the review.
