Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series

22 posts in this topic

I haven't played the Persona series yet but I bought a Playstation 2 to play Persona 4. And I'm going to get a Playstation 3 to play Persona 5 in 2015.

Anyone else into the series or curious about it?

I never played any of the persona games until I bought a PS Vita (last Christmas), then got persona 4: the golden. I adore the game and very much appreciate its playtime, I believe more people should give it a try as it has surprising hidden charm. This was a very nice introduction into the persona series, and at this rate will most likely be buying Persona 5.

I've played all five of the Persona games (as well as FES, Golden, and the PSP remake of 3), one of my favorite series.

The only Persona game that I have not played is Revelations:Persona (the first one). They are one of the quintessential JRPG, if not rpg series in general, out there. They have fantastic stories, characters, and soundtracks. The gameplay is top notch for the most part and they are willing to go into topics that many games do not. I highly recommend them!

I would also recommend that you play Persona 3 prior to Persona 4. From what other people have said, it is hard to go from 4 to 3 in terms of gameplay. Personally, I see no issue with the transition. However, 3 is my favorite so I am somewhat biased.

I'm currently playing through 3: FES right now. I plan to play 1 after that, and I bought a PS3 the other day, so I'll be ready for 5. :D

I played Persona 3: Portable and Persona 4: Golden on my vita last year.

Really enjoyed both games and may have bought a 3DS and PS3 after persona Q/5 were announced  :P

So clearly there are no Persona 4 Arena players here. For those of you who don't know, it takes place after the events of Persona 4 and even includes four Persona 3 characters. Two more in the next game coming out though.

I too own Persona 4: Arena. It was actually my first Persona game. The story of how I got into Persona is a long one. My first exposure to the Persona series was Pandora from Persona 1, and I said to myself "Gah! That thing is horrifying! I don't think I want to play something this disturbing!" That was a few years ago. Then Persona 3 came out on PSN, and on a podcast I listen to...a lot of the guys were talking about how good it was, and saying how excited they were for it. They also talked about how 3 and 4 were very different from 1 and 2. That piqued my interest, so I checked out KagatoTheFinalBoss' Persona 4 Let's Play, and loved every minute of it (except the murder stuff, because that's sad). However, I only had a 360 at the time, so I couldn't play 3, which sucked since I really wanted to support the series. However, I found out that Arena was also on the 360, so I ran to Gamestop and picked up a copy, and loved it (It also introduced my favorite Persona character, Labrys). I did watch a bit of KagatoTheFinalBoss' Persona 3: FES Let's Play, but then I thought to myself "I really want to experience this for myself" So I bought a PS2, along with Persona 3: FES, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 (since I only ever watched walkthroughs and played friends' copies of those two, but this is the Persona thread, not the Kingdom Hearts thread.) Anyway! I was going to buy a PS4, because I knew 5 was coming out eventually...but then it was revealed that it was going to be on the PS3 instead, so I bought a PS3 (So, It's going to be a while before I jump into the next gen, but that's ok).

For those who read through that whole thing...you get a cookie...it's waiting for you on your kitchen table.

I've got Persona 3 Fes, P3 Portable, Persona 4, Persona 4 Golden twice (one normal version and the Solid Gold CE)  and Persona 4 Arena. Not to mention P4 The Animation. Persona is the most awesome game series ever.

Played 1-4, and recommend 3-4 for newcomers. Get FES or the PSP version; the latter has an all new female protagonist which I feel is worth a 2nd playthru if anyone is considering it. All I can say without spoilers is that is adds quite a bit of depth that's brand new to the 3rd game.

So...Rise is going to be in Ultimax as a fighter...I think it's bother crazy and cool that they'd put her in there. (I would link the video, but it's not letting me paste the URL here for some reason.)

I don't care for the persona series very much.  I'm a huge fan of megaten games though.  The creepy atmosphere and dark imagery I enjoy.  Persona is a little too bright and sunshiny.  I'm fighting horrible demons that want to eat my face, but I still gotta make it to school, shop at the mall, hang out with friends, and attend my club activities.  Oh, and I can't neglect my studies.  The first couple of games were pretty dark though and you can tell were derivative of Megaten games.

^ The first three were not like that. Much better atmosphere set with them. They sure changed the music for the worse with the new games. Here's the updated PSPs version of Persona 2 Innocent Sin's opening

Here's how it used to look

At least it does come with both

So...Marie's DLC in Ultimax...I think it's cool, and I might get her, but I've never played Golden, so...I wonder who the next DLC character will be...

Sadly, I was largely ignorant of the SMT series of games until someone suggested Persona 3.

By that time Persona 3 FES had already been announced, so that was the first game in the series I had played.

After that was Persona 4 and Persona 4 Arena, but FES sold me on basically any game made by Atlus and has led to such enjoyable experiences as Devil Summoner 2, Catherine, and Odin Sphere.

I recently got shin megami tensei: devil summoner: soul hackers. It's a sort of old first person dungeon crawler. It was originally on sega saturn but never came to america until they ported it to 3ds a couple years ago. I imagine the mechanics of fighting/talking to demons and recuiting them to your party is the same as persona though. Besides that it's you and your girlfriend. It takes place in this future city where there is a beta test for some virtual reality video game thing, and you are in some hacker gang called the spookies. Parts of it is in the real world part in virtual reality. And you become a devil summoner dude. I think it's pretty good. It's an old game and like the monster graphics aren't all 3d and amazing looking but it still holds up as a good rpg I think. It's really weird and it's pretty challenging, but not impossible hard.

First person dungeon crawlers work pretty well on the 3ds because the map of the dungeon is always on the bottom screen. I've also been playing demos for etrian odyssey games, which are pretty great (also by atlus), in those ones though you have to draw out the maps as you explore it, which I find really addicting and awesome. These games have a more fantasy tone, an you have a party of people rather than recruiting demons.

You can only fight and talk to demons/angels/fairytales/etc in Persona 1 and 2.

Oh.

I really like soul hackers. Last night though I was over 30 minutes into a dungeon without a save and the game froze though! I don't think I've ever had a 3ds game freeze before.

There are part in this game where this spirit guide coyote/rabbit dude makes you go on vision quest things where you play as a different person through an area and see how they died. Then you go to those places as yourself. Also your girl friend is possessed by a demon and she's probably the most entertaining character. There are also all these side activities you can do in virtual reality like going to casino and play different gambling games like poker and stuff, or this thing that asks you trivia questions, or a dating thing that says that I'm not compatible with anyone :(.

Also I heard that the new persona Q on 3ds is also going to be a first person dungeon crawler. It doesn't surprise me since like I said these games work really well on 3ds. And exploring the dungeons is fun.

I used to played Persona games. As now, I'm no longer to buy and play Persona series due to ATLUS banned me on their forums and their own Facebook page for no reasons. So I decided to boycott all ATLUS game products and not to support ATLUS unless they need to dispute and negotiation with me.
