Next level in game immersion...

9 posts in this topic

So I just read on a Dutch gaming newssite (www.gamer.nl for who is interested) about this new device called the Grip. It let's you feel object in video-games...

Can you imagine what can be achieved? Oculus Rift, the Grip, the Omni... This is really exciting stuff and I can't wait to see all these devices combined.

As cool as all of this is, I think that there has to be a limit to immersion (in my opinion).

Don't get me wrong, I love it when a game really pulls you in with it's gameplay/story, but I still like to remember that I'm just playing a game.

Immersion will never be attained until I get my damn HoloDeck! I didn't see any crazy attachments in there.

Seriously though, while I like that displays and feedback are being taken in new directions, as someone who sometimes gets a sore neck from long play sessions with my crazy 7.1 headphones I just can't imagine playing with all these attachments will be comfortable.

Isn't it just a matter of time until those devices are being made into one, though? I mean, these technologies are only getting off the ground now, in 5 years they will be way more polished and in 10 years even more.

Speaking of Holodecks - my local university had an open day at the Human Interface Technology lab and they had some cool 3D tech on display where you would put on a pair of normal 3D glasses on, and they had little tracking balls on them. Then they had a camera (i think they used the kinect) read where you were in 3D space and adjust the image you were seeing to make it feel like you were walking towards or away from the image on the screen rather having it feel like the image was being projected AT you. So as long as one of the screens that has the image on it is in the background it feels like the image is actually in 3D space and you can walk around it and view it from different angles because of the head tracking. They had a 180 degree setup with large screens so to some degree I could walk around the image, it was pretty awesome. So if this could be made in a full 360 degree display with high resolution there's your holodeck.

The ultimate immersion factor is also the worst. Making it so you feel stuff, It could be used as even a drug with something that makes you feel pleasure/'high' or it could potentially kill you. There'd also be a point where people would prefer the game world to the real world all in all. I just made this extremely dark didn't I?
