Wanna try Fallout

12 posts in this topic

After seeing the trailer and hype for Fallout 4, I really wanna play a Fallout game, which should I get on Steam? New Vegas or Fallout 3?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Well, they're very similar games with mostly just changes in settings and characters. Although I think it's important to note that Fallout New Vegas does have an aim down the sights mechanic. Fallout 3 takes place in Washington DC so you explore areas like the Smithsonian and you will get wrapped up in a conflict between an organization that hoards all modern technology and an organization that is basically the remains of America's elite. New Vegas takes place in Las Vegas as the name suggests. The brotherhood of Steel from Fallout 3 is virtually nonexistent and the fighting is going on between a group of slavers and the New California Republic. So to be honest it's pretty much personal preference at this point, which do you like better exploring a post-apocalyptic DC or Vegas.

I say New Vegas all the way. A lot of people will probably say 3 because it had better atmosphere, but I think that's just personal preference. I thought New Vegas had a more upbeat world, whereas 3 was more true to the franchise. I also say New Vegas because you can mod the heck out of it. Not only graphics mods, but excellent story, NPC, character, customization, and a whole host of other varieties.

I think I will get Fallout 3 because I love the idea of a post apocalyptic world to be alittle more seriously, thanks, but if I like 3, I'll probuably get New Vegas down the road

It depends. Like Nicky and articman said, it's personal preference.

For me New Vegas was better because of the atmosphere and it was more lore-friendly to Fallout 2. In Fallout 2, you fought the Enclave and beat them. Their presence on the West Coast almost dissapeared but on the East Coast they grew more powerful. That's where you kind of keep on fighting them in F3. New Vegas is basically...well different storyline, it has nothing to do with Enclave this time but still has a lot more connectivity IMO with Fallout 2. Maybe it's because they added lots of references, few characters and soundtracks from Fallout 2. Fallout 3 was a whole different game since it was set on the otherside of USA.

Fallout 3 isn't darker, it's simply the map which has the darker atmosphere. In Fallout 3 the capital city is basically just a ruin filled with super mutants and New Vegas is basically a liveful, vibrant city where casinos and mobs took over.

It really depends on what you want. Want a more post-apocalyptic feeling? Get Fallout 3. Want a more hopeful place to explore? Get New Vegas.

Me, I prefer the darker atmosphere of Fallout 3.

I really like Fallout 3 myself, never got a chance to play New Vegas though I hope to fix that someday. Either way, have fun exploring an America set in a futuristic 50s wasteland!

Vegas has improved gameplay (combat, skill, reputation, and conversation wise), companions, writing, and better thought out locations. Much better DLC content as well.

Fallout 3 is better for the more cliche barren wasteland apocalypse with almost no settlements.

Both are on sale now but they will probably be made cheaper during the upcoming Steam sale.

New Vegas has more choices and more ways of completing the game.

When I first played Fallout 3 it honestly depressed me at first lol. The wasteland does feel like a wasteland. So better atmosphere for Fallout 3, yet new vegas has better gameplay and (IMO) story.

That's a tough decision for me, really it is.  In the end though, for me, Fallout 3 wins by a 0.0000000001 lead in points.  It just seems like a better place to start assuming that you have never played a Fallout game before.   Still, Fallout New Vegas is great.  One more thing, they'll probably be putting Fallout games on sale because of Fallout 4 soon to introduce people to the franchise so wait a few weeks to see if a discount occurs.

I would say New Vegas is better mechanically. But for me, atmospherically, Fallout 3 is better. New Vegas is also a bit less serious. There's more humour in it and it doesn't always take itself seriously. That is fine by me, but sometimes I find it collides with the setting. It's a vision of a dark and grim future and humour doesn't really have a place in that, I feel.

Play them both. Whatever you can get first the cheapest. You won't regret it.
