The New Hitman Game Will Now Be Episodic

21 posts in this topic

Not sure why Square Enix is doing this since the price still remains the same, but the new Hitman will be released in episodic form. One new episode per month, I believe.

Were Square Enix just really surprised by the success of Life is Strange and decided that all their games should be that way from now on? If they're keeping the price point the same then that's cool, it'll help people with less money spread the cost, but I just hate episodes! Even TV series I find annoying when the do this, and that's been going on forever.

Couldn't agree more. I can't even watch TV shows unless they're on Netflix, lol. The wait between these Hitman episodes are going to be torturous.

Well at least it's the same price, maybe there doing it so they can get the game out as soon as possible and start getting revenue from it.

For this particular franchise you could argue that it suits an episodic style since each one could be dedicated to a specific target but let's be honest... It's just because it's popular right now.

The (I still think entirely pointless) FFVII remake has gone episodic because they think it will pull in the fans into buying each episode which it probably will. The Walking Dead games worked in this format because is was a parable take on an established franchise that was in an episodic structure to begin with..

This is already an established and active franchise in a full game format that has not existed in this episodic manner so the only motivation is..... To be honest I have no clue.... I would say money but even that doesn't seem to add up. Breaking up Agent 47's story into segregated parts is a bit like Angry Joe splitting his review videos in to individual parts. Like one dedicated graphics, then another separate video for characters, then another for sound design, then gameplay... it not necessary

For Hitman I would rather just play the whole thing so I'd just wait for all parts to be released anyway.

The thing is, I genuinly don't think that's gonna make the game more profitable. There will be people, even with an established series like Hitman, who will buy the first episode, decide the don't want the others and then that's it. Somebody with a bad early impression. If the game was one complete one-sale lump, that guy who decided "Fuck It" after episode one would have spent $60 instead of $10. He also may have pushed though and found the rest of the game was much better for him, meaning he'd considerer the $60 investment worth it rather than feel ripped off by $10. Bad rep for less cash, makes no sense.

Now, The game will likely show it's best early on to encourage people to keep going, making that scenario an unlikely occurrence for the majority of the playerbase, but just the fact they're even doing it this way at all will put some fans off or at least convince them to wait for the full game (That's what I plan to do for FFVII remake). Unless Square know something I don't, this is short sighted and will only hurt them in the long run. It's the same price, so it's not like they're really ripping anyone off, so why does this benefit them?

All you had to do was stop buying episodic games...

Hasn't that been the plan since the game was announced?

Well, I waited for all the episodes to be out before I bought Life is Strange and Telltale's The Walking Dead, so nuh!

But seriously, episodic games aren't a bad thing, it just only makes sense for certain types of games that were made to be presented that way, but I see Square extending that to area's it doesn't belong. That worries me.

Not exactly. Originally, they said the entire story would be out at once, then they would continue adding more and more in DLC form. But the idea they originally had was actually a bit similar to Destiny. DLC for years to come.

That's odd, that's the opposite of what I always heard. I saw multiple people talking about how the game was going to be released in parts months ago.

I haven't heard that, but I could be wrong. This is the first I've heard of this being officially announced though.

This is not a TV series it's a game for fuck's sake.

Add in some cinematic action and some qte's and you got the perfect movie-like experience.

Games are games, not movies and devs should get over it already.

Episodic games are a bad thing.  If its a franchise i really like i want to play the damn game!  Not just a section of it then have to wait a period of time to continue playing.

Maybe its just me but i just seems like a half assed way of making a game.  Like the effort isnt there they just want to start making money quicker rather then make sure its a good fun quality game before it hits the shelves.  Now if they release the first episode aswell as the full version at the same time then fair enough,  Atleast that way those that may need to spread the cost can do so and those that want to play the game in all its glory can do so aswell.

You could just wait for it to release fully, like you would have had to anyway if the game wasn't being released in an episodic format.

Hitman won't apply since it's Square, but for a lot of games releasing in an episodic format it's both the only way to get funding and allows them to get feedback and make changes in future entries based on how the earlier sections are received.

Oh, how considerate of Square. They know I have hundreds of unplayed games on steam and shouldn't be buying new games. Thank you!

I think it'll still retain its open world nature though. They already stated before that they'll be releasing new contracts n whatnot even after the game launches and that once the contract character dies in your game they're dead forever.

OH BOY

EPISODIC GAMES

AND FROM SQUARE ENIX TOO!

Yeah they totally won't jack the price of each episode up slightly. Or something like that. It's the modern game industry, they'll find SOME way to fuck it up.
