Am I The Only One Around Here Who Doesn't Like Anime?

I don't even like animes and it seems like there are some pretty unnecessary comments in this post, Commander Sheperd. You make this "trend" (along with others) sound like it's bad. If you personally don't like it, then don't concern yourself with it. Simple.

When it comes to why people like it, why do you like the shows you watch? People are just into different things.

i was asking i have the right to freedom of speech and to ask a simple question  so dont talk to me like i should shut my mouth about what i want to know

I don't know why you wouldn't like anime. That's like me saying I don't like books, or movies, or video games. There's a lot out there. I'll definitely give you that most of what I've seen talked about in the forum is pretty generic stuff like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and DBZ but I look at that the same as I do gamers who only talk about Madden and Call of Duty and think those are the only things out there.

i was talking to some fellas on teamspeak and they said you can get some really dark mature ones would you suggest any im not saying i totally hate it im just curious as to what people like about i t

Me, no, I haven't watched anything anime or TV wise in years besides Game of Thrones after friends asked me to. Used to watch a lot of anime reviews from TGWTG people.  Ask him

The problem is saying you don't watching anime is like saying I don't watch TV or movies. Anime is basically a style of drawing and within it are several genres. If you name a genre you've seen in any TV show or movie, Anime has it and different styles of character designs, not just "girly men"

Here are some examples of several different types of anime series. They are mostly short trailers or the opening intros to episodes and are short, so just take a look.

Also I better pray Commander. Shepard didn't watch the 4Kids dub of One Piece cause...watch this scene

And for something just out of context

Because you watch only one anime, you cannot judge all anime is bad. There are some animes that only show underaged girl, spiky hair, or oversized weapons. I myself hating that kind of animes too. But I believe there some anime not like that. You hate feminine man anime? Why not you watch Jojo's Bizzare Adventure or Hokuto no Ken that kind of example that anime is not about feminine man.

IMO,

I believe why some people like loli or underaged anime girls its because they think is cute. Because well... some people like cute things like cats, dogs, puppies ,etc, right?.  I have friends that always like that kind of anime. I asked why they always watch this kind of anime. They always said that the characters is cute and interesting, the story is not somewhat gritty, simple, fun and its entertaining. and a lot people agree.

Watching anime for them is to entertain themself from the harsh world of reality. Just like playing video games for entertainment purpose. But hey, men / women always like beautiful girls / handsome boys, right?.  Also watching anime is like living in the world of fantasy that cannot be done in reality. For example like Gundam, Space Battleship Yamato, Sword Art Online, etc. Just like people love Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Game of Throne, etc because it requires a lot imagination to make it and people like this.Thats why anime is so popular.

No one force you to watch anime. If you dont like it then just move on and watch another show or playing good games.

Anime is like everything else on TV:

You like certain shows and genres, some shows are jaw droppingly amazing, others are okay but memorable, everything else is crap and garbage just to pander to the majority.

There's something for everyone, basically. But hey, if you truly don't enjoy anime, it's all cool. To each their own.

Some animes I'd imagine you may enjoy are:

Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Gun Grave, Black Lagoon, Fist of the North Star, Ergo Proxy, Hellsing, Monster, Basilisk, Ghost in the Shell, Eden of the East, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Blood The Last Vampire (maybe Blood + and C), Gantz, (maybe?) Elfen Lied, Blue Gender, Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai, Darker than Black, Ninja Scroll, (maybe?) Baccano, Crying Freeman, Riding Bean, Wolf's Rain, (maybe this if you don't mind high school) School Days, Death Note, Lain, Deadman Wonderland, Shigurui... uhhhhhhh... that's all I got right now.

Oh, a really good one is Akira. The crowning jewel of hand drawn animation. Very mature, too.

I don't understand why it is so popular, its just an art style with spiky hair and way too feminine men, i suppose i get why 10 year olds like it because its what pokemon is but there are adults who are fascinated with it! Its become way too big a trend, like crocs , there is no reason for it! Ever time i walk into a book store there is a whole freaking section devoted to this stuff and how to draw it! if your under 16 years old dont bother to explain to me why you like it but if their are any male/female young adults that are 18 or above plz explain to me why the feck this is so interesting? im not trying to hate IM JUST REALLY CURIOUS

Fucking hate ageism, it's a massive fucking logical fallacy, and often times the people who use that damn ploy are worse than the people they're trying to restrict.

Also Anime often has unqie plots not found here in the 'States and other parts of the western world. Also many enjoy the are style, they fined it interesting and cute. Also you can do so much more with this style of animation than lets say, chibi. Also: Who. The. Fuck. Cares. If. It's. Feminine. There's nothing wrong with a guy whose into something considered feminine. All that is is an excuse to be derogatory to people who like shit you don't like. Also many anime are not feminine in the least (Trigun anyone?). And there is a reason for anime, contrary to your stupid belief, it's to entertain people. It's also hardly a trend, considering it has been around since the 70's, hell some of my favorites are from the 80's. And there's plenty to like. Like gory fight sceans? Deadman Wonderland, in the first 15 minutes an entire classroom is butchered and torn to pieces? Like cute shit? Uputte! is kawaii as fuck nigga. Like a combo? Girls und Panzer. There's so many different anime out there's plenty to be interested in. Also you're judging an entire style of story telling based on one thing you watched? That's like say 'I hate all game reviewers because I watched ZeroPuncuation and didn't like it'.

no i also dont like animes, especially japanese animes :3

hey just annoy me with all the maniac facial expressions *_*

Way to generalize an entire demographic of people based on how a select few act. I fucking hate pretty much everyone that does that, wether or not they watch anime. And more serious and mature anime don't have those weird 'chibitized' facial expressions.

i feel like i lose iq of if a watch them its like so all over the place it makes no sense i guess if i was high it would giggle a bit then have nightmares

I used to watch anime when I was 10 or 12, but then I quickly lost interest in it when i became a teenager ( i still am ).

Just like a TV series, anime takes WAY TOO LONG to tell the story. And its filled with so much fillers to the point where in a 25 min episode only 5 minutes is devoted to the main storyline. Same is said for most TV series.

Also, I'm pretty decent at drawing, art and those kind of stuff. AND IT PAINS ME IN THE HEART when I see people who draw simple anime characters get WAY more recognition then they should. The artstyle itself is uninteresting to me, as well as the tropes that come with anime, such as weird hairstyles, over the top expressions, the portrayal of underaged girls and whiny teenagers with oversized swords. That said, I heavily dislike JRPGs, except for Dark Souls, which isn't exactly a JRPG.

I understand that some anime have fantastic storylines and all, but having to bear hundreds of episodes to see it being told is just ridiculous. And yes, you have permission to bash me, I've earned it

>anime takes WAY TOO LONG to tell the story

No. You're flat out wrong. You get some that do that, like Dragon Ball, and Bleach. You also get some that are short and pack a punch, like elfen lied. That managed to pack a hell of a story, some pretty fucking cool fight sceans, as well as a statement about the world in 13 episodes. That's better than most T.V. shows and video games.

>Also, I'm pretty decent at drawing, art and those kind of stuff. AND IT PAINS ME IN THE HEART when I see people who draw simple anime characters get WAY more recognition then they should

Whohoo, more logical falsies. That's with anything though, porn art gets more attention than it should, especially when it's R34. Same goes with shitty little cell shaded MLP art. Same goes with -insert large demographic of people here-. It's because more people are looking for that style of art, specifically. Most people don't look at all different styles of art, so the less popular styles get less views. There's also a shit ton more reasons why that are gets more views too, a big one being community and platforms to share it across, which most other art styles don't have.

I don't really watch anime, but I don't hate it. The only "anime" I watch is RWBY, but I don't really think it's considered anime, more anime inspired than anything. But yeah, my point is I don't have a problem with it, and there's no need to bash people who enjoy it. It's just another way to express themselves, why be bothered by it?

Yeah RWBY isn't anime. It has to be drawn in Japan in a specific style to be anime. Same reason why Avatar: The Last Air Bender isn't anime. Although RWBY is fucking awesome, and Blake is best girl.

i was asking i have the right to freedom of speech so dont talk to me like i should shut my mouth about what i want to know

You posted your opinion on a forum, people are going to bash you, tell you to shut your fucking mouth, and say you're wrong. If you don't like that don't use forums. Also watch Afro Samurai, no story, just a shit ton of awesome fighting, and weedsmoking. It's fucking great.

neva watched it never will

Why? Sush a stupid thing todo. All you're doing is shutting out a shit ton of awesome content based on stereotypes.

I get why some people wouldn't like anime though, the art style could be one (just like how I can't watch any film with fucking shaky cam, I hate that shit), they simply don't like the style of story telling, etc. So don't think I'm just being an eleitest. I'm not saying you have to like or watch anime, I simply hate people who draw stupid conclusions from stupid sources. 'Hur i watch one episode of one anime and didn't like it therefore i dont like anime' is a stupid reason. I encourage everyone to try out like 2 or 3 different anime series.

I don't even watch a lot of anime lel

I don't hate it and there are some shows that I like a lot (Cowboy Bebop, Big O, FLCL) for their art style/story but for the most part just... ech. A lot of it has to do with the diehard fanbase of some shows. Or just anime in general. You know, the kind of people who think that anime just does no wrong and they insult anyone who doesn't like it. They go hard in the shit and they put me off it big time.

Yes it's true that I committed the logical fallacy of hasty generalization, but it wasn't far off from the fact that the majority of anime are serials, especially the popular ones.

And why do you say that you're not telling anyone to watch anime when a few lines above that sentence you criticized a guy for not wanting to watch anime?

Just to make it clear, I use to watch TONS of anime till about 6 years ago, so don't tell me that I'm judging anime from watching one episode. Heck anime was all I watched on TV when I was a kid, I just grew out of it. I couldn't stand the cheesy dialogue and the tropes like the portrayal of underaged girls. Once again, this obviously doesn't happen in all anime but it's a regular thing.

"And who cares if it's feminine?" Duh, the people who dislike anime!

And quit telling people why their reasons are illogical or whatever, they're still reasons no matter how stupid they sound. If they saw one episode of anime and didn't like it then leave them be. If they've never seen anime before and never will then leave them be. You're contradicting yourself at the end of your post by saying that you're not an elitist that way. If you were telling people how good and awesome anime is then fine. But what you're doing is bashing the people who dislike anime; that's not cool.

If you like anime and wanna watch anime go ahead, cos that's your cup of tea. I ain't gonna bother you and say that 'ooohh you shouldn't watch anime man! that shit sucks!'.

Freedom of speech doesn't work like that bub, it doesn't give you immunity to criticism and he was being polite too. The point is you're hating on stuff you admittedly know very little about.

No, you have the right to have an opinion. You don't have the right to an audience for your opinion and if enough people disagree with what you are saying, your speech can be muffled.

It's okay to hate anime, because most of them are shit anyways. Most of them are targeted at a very niche demographic, even most Japanese don't watch that stuff. This comes from a guy who watches 20+ different anime a week.

If we are talking about new age anime...i totaly aggree. It is crap. Now if we are talking older stuff it looks more like quality animation. The plots/stories told are beter too.Could be that i am older but even if people would call animated movies , like Akira,Nausicaa of the valley of the wind,Princess Mononoke and other old stuff, anime i could never put them in the same category as the crap some of you watch today.

I understand that there are some people who just doesn't like anime (cough, my parents) and wonders on why it even interesting. To put it in perspective, anime is like a normal television shows, where some of them are childish and some of them are mature. Its up to you on to watch either one.

My guess is that you've never seen the more bloody stuff of it, or the more mature stuff, or the hentai stuff.

Anime is immensely popular because it tells a story with very pretty imagery just like a movie does. It can also do it better because it doesn't need to rely on actors performing impossible stunts or dying doing those stunts. It also tells many good stories as equal to many crappy stories.

Here I will list at least four of my favorite anime and as to why they are so.

Welcome to the NHK - This is the story about a man in his early 20's who is a so-called Hikikomori and a NEET. NEET stands for Not Empoloyed Educated or in Training. He lives on his own and sleep something like 16 hours a day and eventually comes up with this crazy idea that it's all a conspiracy of the government. Eventually he meets this girl (because !storytelling!) who tries to help him become more socialble. At the same time, he discovers that his neighbour is his old friend from school and together they try to produce a visual novel (eroge) type game. Later in the show, it starts to deal with people who are suicidal who feel no reason to live, and people who get into shady businesses as well as people who get addicted to MMORPG's. This show has character growth, it has drama, and it has comedy.

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuiokuhen - This is my favorite anime movie pretty much and it tells the story of a young idealistic man's choice to aid one of the many factions on feudal Japan. His desire aligns itself with the (since I don't know their proper name, lets call it the-) democrats of the era as he wishes everyone to feel safe. His idealist nature sort of glorifies to not kill but he is forced to kill because that is the only way a new era can come about. His actions in this time will come to haunt him for the rest of his life for which he always tries to repent his actions. It's very dramatic and slow paced. This movie and the TV show overall would later be remade into the live action movie from 2012 which doesn't tell much of his previous life but still is good.

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - Do you Remember Love? - This story is rather basic but really good, dramatic, and dark natured. Around the start of the 20th Century (from my counting, say 1999) this very large spaceship crashed down onto Earth. Man initially fought over it but eventually came together and rebuilt it, sparking a new age for mankind. Ten years passes, technology advances and they are ready to do a test flight of the ship when they come under attack from an Alien race that has been chasing that very ship. In fact, their own ship by automatic senses the enemy ship and pre-emptively fires at them, annihilating one. My memory fades a bit but they decide to escape by using their warp drives / time displacement drive / whateverdrive but due to their proximity to Earth, they accidentally warped the town along with them, forcing them to pick up most of the town and it's inhabitants to the ship. The ship, now housing around 50, 000 people attempts to get back to Earth with their warp engine now broken.

This Spoiler tag will spoil some parts of the story.

The TV show and Movie differs in that we're never told the origins in the Movie as we are in the TV show, thus relying on you to know that before hand. It also differs in the general ending where in the TV show as they return, humanity are reluctant to let people of the ship. And the ship accidentally destroys a town. The TV show also shows around 4, 000, 000 Alien ships blasting Earth and killing every person on the planet. In the movie version, when the ship returns to Earth this has already happened as Earth is nothing more than an apocalyptic wasteland. It also differs in the final fight in that in the TV show, they use a bunch of different pop songs because these aliens have never encountered culture before and they believe humans are the so-called "Proto" race which created them. In the Movie version, they use the song "Do you remember love?" which is an ancient love song, long before even humans as we know us today existed to turn and defeat the aliens known as the Zentradi. The love song is a plot device in the show because the Zentradi only knows war and nothing else - encountering humans turned out to be very dangerous for them as Humans showed them what a culture is like, what love is like, that there are things more important than war all the time.

This is a very dramatic movie, and I rate it very highly.

Mobile Suit Igloo: Hidden One Year War, Apocalypse 0079, and MS Igloo 2 - These shows tell the story of Gundam from the perspective of Zeon (with the exception of MS Igloo 2). They are all dramatic stories, with great voice actors, and excellent storytelling and an amazing soundtrack. I don't really need to say much more than that. I've written about this before in one of the other Anime threads here.

So to answer your question, why does many like Anime?

Because they can tell very dramatic, very good stories. They can be goofy, they can be funny, they can be ero, they can be bloody and gorey, they can be sad, they can be happy. The best course is of course, to find it out yourself. I for example don't like harem shows because they're always in my mind, rather stupid. Highschool of the Dead was good until the two fanservice episodes which are just a complete lie. Just try and look for that which you are interested in really.

But never, ever, ask this generic question;
"I'm looking for a good anime, can you recommend me one?"
Because taste is subjective, and the majority watches the most popular shows which may not be of the same taste.
Instead, ask a better question.
"I'm looking for anime within this category, can you recommend me one?"

If absolutely no interest in anime then the choice is very simple.
Just don't watch it or bother :P

There is no such thing as a singular anime art stpye or plot.

Saying "anime" is like saying "Holywood movie" - it's a entire COLLECTION of genres, art and stories.
